Everyone knows that you can’t help who you fall in love with.
But in some instances, such as that of Monica Mares and her 19-year-old son Caleb, love can wind a pretty strange path. In what is a pretty sad story, Monica, now 38, gave birth to her son when she was 16 and gave him up for adoption.
But last Christmas the pair, who are from New Mexico, met for the first time after finding each other on Facebook. Caleb quickly moved in, and he says promptly fell in love with his mum:
“I never had anyone cook me meals or give me anything…I never got anything my entire life and she went out of her way to make me happy…After about a week or so I started having feelings for her, and I guess I fell in love.”
Monica, who has nine other children, said she instantly felt “comfortable” with her estranged son, and recounted the first time they were intimate:
“The first time we were physical we ended up holding hands, and then we ended up kissing and the kissing led to other things…I felt comfortable with him and we fell even more deeply in love.”
The pair have now been ordered to have no contact, and will stand trial for incest later this year. If found guilty, they could face a prison sentence of up to 18 months. However, they are adamant that they love each other, and have decided to go public with their relationship in the hope of raising awareness around what they believe is a condition called Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA).
They hope that if people are more wary of the condition – which occurs when relatives meet for the first time as adults – it could help lead the courts to judge their relationship as being legal.
Asked what he’d say if he could speak to his mother, Caleb told The Daily Mail:
“If I could speak to her now, I would say to her: I love you and I miss you and I cant wait to see you again
